Livestock on the farm include a 20 head Limousin cow herd, a few feeder and replacement calves, an 80 doe rabbitry and various types of poultry. Most calves from the cow herd are sold at 6-8 months of age at local livestock auctions and a few are kept to be raised for beef and replacement heifers. The young fryer rabbits are sold at 5-6 lbs to processing plants . There is always a fresh supply of frozen fryers, rabbit sausage, ground meat, and pot pies available at the farm and the Frontenac Farmers Market (FFM). Fresh farm eggs are always available at the farm gate. Besides our gardens near the house, several acres of cropland are set aside each year for sweet corn, pumpkins, squash, and gourds. The produce from the gardens is sold at the FFM, at the farm gate, and a few other local shops. The rest of the cropland produces feed for the cattle. Sixteen acres of woodlot which is predominately Sugar Maple trees provide the sap to make 300-400 litres of Pure Maple Syrup each February, March, and /or April. The syrup is available at the farm gate and the FFM. |
